Hard working and loyal caregivers set your home care business apart, leading to a solid reputation and an increase in referrals. So when hiring, how can you tell if the person is an A+ caregiver?

Identifying A+ Caregivers

Before hiring a caregiver, first take a look at their circumstances. Is this person a CNA? Do they have experience as a caregiver? Is this a college student wanting a job to help pay for school? The circumstances don’t label each person as good or bad, but give insight as to their motivation.

The circumstances will also show how prepared a person is for a job that can be both mentally and physically draining. If someone has taken care of a frail parent or is a CNA, they will most likely understand the demands of the job better than someone without training. There is a high turnover ratio for caregivers, and a big reason is because applicants don’t understand ahead of time what the job entails–and as a result, they may be more likely to quit after a short time on the job.

Advertising Your Open Positions

It can be hard to find new employees, and although there are no guarantees, proper advertising can increase your chances of finding qualified applicants. Keep in mind the following aspects of advertising a job opening:

  1. Details – Many businesses post an ad but don’t list the specific details and requirements of the job. This typically leads to a high number of resumes, which can be difficult to sift through. Try describing your ideal caregiver in your ads and  make your expectations clear.
  2. Briefly describe benefits – You want to catch their attention. Quality caregivers know their value, so don’t be afraid to say “great pay” or “flexible hours.” Mention any health benefits or bonus programs in place. You don’t want your ad to be a novel, but just briefly point out what you have to offer.
  3. Advertise in the right places  Advertise at CNA schools, post jobs on your website, and use your current caregivers as a network for referrals. Online classifieds, such as Craigslist, can be great resources for drawing candidates, but be aware that these sources may also attract some unqualified applicants.

In conclusion, having top quality, compassionate caregivers will ensure happy clients. Happy clients refer their friends, family, and people in their community, and the more referrals you receive, the faster your company’s growth will be.  That means your caregivers are the backbone to your success, and putting forth the effort to obtain and retain those A+ caregivers is the best investment you can make.
