Happy Valentine’s Day! Although Valentine’s Day is today, that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate those you love and care for all year round. Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to brighten your clients’ day by showing them how much they mean to you.

This past year was a difficult one for my family. My grandma passed away in March, and I know with her passing, my grandpa felt like his life had lost meaning. It was difficult to watch him lose his companion of 60 years. Valentine’s Day was one of their favorite holidays, not just to celebrate their love but the love they have for their family. I imagine this Valentine’s Day brings an added weight of sorrow to his life. Unfortunately, my grandpa’s story is not a unique one. Many seniors are widowed or alone and holidays can heighten that loneliness. Finding ways do something kind for your clients, widowed or not, can brighten their Valentine’s Day and add a little extra care to their normal routine. Here are a few ways to make this holiday special:

1. Be Their Valentine

Write a Valentine’s Day card for your clients. A Valentine’s Day card may be a small thing, but it can go a long way. Express how much you’ve enjoyed working with your clients and what you love best about caring for them.

2. Read Letters

If your clients have lost a significant other, offer to read journal entries or old letters from their spouse. If they don’t have access to that, just reminisce with them for a few minutes about how they fell in love and their favorite memories.

3. Make Decorations

Take a few minutes to make a few Valentine-themed decorations to brighten their home. They may not be capable of hanging things, so offer to hang them as well.

4. Bring Them Sweet Treats

You don’t have to go above and beyond for this, but bringing your clients a few love-themed treats will brighten their day and remind them that they have people who care for them.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a reminder to your clients that they may be alone or that their family is far away. You can be their family for the day! Let them know they are important and cared for by doing something special for them today.
