Are your caregivers “fired-up” about learning?
William Butler Yeats said, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
Are your caregivers “fired-up” about learning?
CNA Week starts this week! It’s a great time to think about how you can get your caregivers motivated, excited, and fired-up about their continuing education!
Here are few ideas:
- Make learning competitive! Announce an award that will go to the caregiver who completes the most hours of continuing education in a specific period (calendar quarter or year) or on a particular subject (Alzheimer’s disease, cooking for clients).
- Turn caregivers into experts. Challenge your caregivers to become the “expert” in a topic that interests them. Then have the “expert” teach an inservice on that topic.
- Take it further. Consider developing a tuition reimbursement plan or a college scholarship program for caregivers who want to further their educations.
- Client care meetings. Hold a monthly client care meeting where your caregivers present each of their clients to the rest of the group. Encourage them to think about the clients’ needs and what additional training they may need to fulfill those needs.
- Set learning goals. On your CNAs’ yearly performance evaluations, make sure that at least one of their goals has to do with learning.
- Get social! Use your facebook group or send out group emails each week with thought-provoking questions. For example, you might ask everyone to respond with one new thing they learned this week. Or, what’s one thing I wish I knew before I encountered ____.
