home-care-books

As a small business owner, you are most likely a constant learner. You constantly strive to learn about your employees, home care, and how to successfully run your business. Though there are few books specifically directed to Home Care Businesses, there are many general business books that can help you to create a more efficient and successful business. CEO, Aaron Marcum, tells us why he has incorporated these top 5 books into his business, and what he loves about them.

1. Good to Great

Overview: How can good companies, mediocre companies, and even bad companies achieve greatness? Jim Collins discusses the principles and tools required to take your business from good to great including what makes a Level 5 Leader, the Hedgehog Concept, the Culture of Discipline, and the Flywheel and the Doom Loop.

Aaron: The concept of the three circles (The Hedgehog Concept) is one of the many principles I love about this book. The three circles help you move your business from good to great. The three circles are:

(1) What can you be the best at?

(2) Does it feed your passion?

(3) Does it drive your economic engine? Can you make money doing it?

2. Essentialism

Overview: A must-read for any leader, manager, or individual who wants to declutter and organize their own lives.

Aaron: This has quickly become one of my favorite business books. It has helped me prioritize what is truly essential, not only in my work life but also in my personal life. One of my favorite principles the author introduces is that of “Essential Intent.” What is it you want to accomplish in your organization? Specifically, what is your intent. It is this decision, or intent, that will help you when big decisions come later on.

3. The Slight Edge

Overview: Learn why some can accomplish all their goals and dreams while others spend their lives building someone else’s dreams.

Aaron: I like this book because it talks about how doing the simple things in life can make all the difference. Basic principles of self-discipline and goal setting are discussed, but Jeff Olsen has a way of expressing these principles with a fresh perspective.

4. EntreLeadership

Overview: Your business will never grow beyond you, so ask yourself: Are you growing? Dave Ramsey gives you a practical, step-by-step guide to growing your business in the direction you want it to go.

Aaron: I enjoyed this book due to Dave Ramsey’s Christian-based approach of running his business. He talks about the basic practices of leading your company to success. One of my favorite parts of the book is the section on hiring his entreleaders.

5. Start with Why

Overview: Simon Sinek shows that the most successful people act, think, and communicate the same way, and it all starts with the WHY.

Aaron: This is a timeless book that has also quickly become one of my favorites due to Simon Sinek’s argument of starting with WHY versus starting with WHAT or HOW. It has helped me focus more on my WHY as a business owner and the importance of connecting my team members to that WHY. I now teach this principle, from a home care owner perspective, to our customers.

Improving your home care business takes consistency and patience. By studying and applying the principles from the above books, you will see increased growth in your business and increased satisfaction among staff and caregivers.
