Home Care Office Staff Hiring Tips

True or False? It’s never okay to discuss religion or spiritual matters with your clients.

Like it the old fashioned way?

True or False? It’s never okay to discuss religion or spiritual matters with your clients.

The answer is: False.

It’s OKAY to ask a client about his or her religious beliefs; in fact, it may bring great comfort. Just be sure not to push your religious views on your clients.

What is spiritual care?

Spiritual caregiving is not just about religion. While religion can play an essential role in bringing people peace, more often, it’s the people in our day-to-day lives that have the most influence.

Spiritual caregiving is about being able to listen and understand another person’s pain, sorrow, fear, or any other uncomfortable feeling – in a warm, caring, and non-judgmental way – to help the person who is suffering feel less alone.

Here are the facts:

  • More than a quarter (27%) of all U.S. adults say they think of themselves as SPIRITUAL but not religious.
  • Nine out of ten Americans (89%) say they believe in “God” or a “universal spirit.”
  • Nearly half (41%) of all patients want to discuss religious concerns with their doctors, nurses, and caregivers only half of those report having such a discussion.
