Relevant patient examples and clinical best practices in anticipating and managing distressing symptoms are reviewed. Information is provided to support clinical best practice in preparing patients and families for what is to come.

  • Recognize family caregiver disease trajectory knowledge deficits, including potential for distressing symptoms and crises.
  • Apply elements of an Anticipatory Symptom Management Plan to patient scenarios.
  • Identify common urgent symptoms in hospice.
  • Select the most appropriate response to patient episodes of symptom distress and crises.
