Thinking Critically about Abuse and Neglect in Home Care and Hospice

This course covers the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Conditions of Participation components and the recent Office of Inspector General (OIG) report related to abuse and neglect. Reporting policies and guidelines are reviewed. The ethical challenges typically encountered are explored via case scenarios.

  • List those who are considered mandatory reporters.
  • Differentiate between the six types of abuse and neglect defined by the Centers for Disease Control
  • Identify four common risk factors found in abuse and neglect situations.
  • Identify mandatory abuse and neglect reporting pathways and timeframes outlined in the Conditions of Participation for Home Care and Hospice providers.
  • Differentiate between reportable and non-reportable abuse/neglect situations when competent adults are involved.
