Basics of Caregiving

According to the 2022 HCP Benchmarking Report, agencies are providing training in at least 10 of the following basic topics:

If you’d like to train your caregivers to stand out beyond the industry’s necessary skillset, consider adding a few of the most popular training topics among caregivers and clients alike.

  • Housekeeping: While these skills may seem like common sense, caregivers are often unsure of how much housekeeping they should be doing. While “light housekeeping” is a common requirement of the job, caregivers are unsure if that includes scrubbing the shower, rearranging furniture, cleaning the bathroom floors, or doing laundry.

    Training your caregivers in household basics will clarify expectations and establish boundaries as they’re taught which types of chores are and aren’t expected while they’re in their client’s home. It also guarantees caregivers are comfortable in their work environment by going over how to navigate common household appliances.

  • Transportation safety: As your caregivers will occasionally have to drive their clients to appointments, it’s important that they are up to date on client transportation safety protocols like maintaining vehicle cleanliness to store walkers or wheelchairs, regulating a client’s temperature while in the vehicle, and being considerate of a client’s music preferences.

    Equipping your caregivers with transportation safety training also benefits your schedulers, because it expands the pool of employees they can rely on while matching caregivers to clients in need of transportation. It is also helpful for schedulers to know which caregivers have vehicles that are ideal for transporting client supplies and are easy for clients to get into ahead of time.

  • Preventing pressure ulcers: Clients who remain in the same position for too long often develop injuries and sores—a common problem in home care. Since regular exercise isn’t possible for bedbound patients, some clients need to be moved every two hours. As a result, caregivers should be trained in how to identify a pressure ulcer, the signs of an improving or worsening condition, and techniques for proper repositioning. It is also helpful for caregivers to know how to use a pressure-altering mattress, which alternates the pressure between sides without the need for manual repositioning.

  • Recognizing abnormal observations: What your caregiver decides to document can prove to be detrimental to their protection, the client’s health and safety, and your agency’s liability. Take the guessing game out of client records by clarifying which types of information your caregivers are expected to document on each caregiver visit note.

    Caregivers should be able to identify basic normal and abnormal observations in urine color, blood pressure, and skin turgor levels. This type of training will empower your caregivers to be the first members of the care team to notice and address any preventable issues.

  • Mental illness: As 1 in every 4 adults over the age of 65 have reported having anxiety or depression since the pandemic, it’s never been more crucial to equip your caregivers with the tools they need to care for clients coping with mental illness. Help your caregivers feel confident providing support to a client in a moment of distress. Once your caregivers are trained in caring for particular mental illnesses, promote it as a specialty your agency offers.

  • Stroke: In the United States alone, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds. Your caregivers need to know how to recognize the signs of stroke and care for clients after they are discharged from the hospital. Train your caregivers to know what a stroke is, which side to dress clients on first, and how to use/plug in a power chair.

  • Preventing readmissions: According to the CDC, $50 billion is spent on medical costs related to non-fatal fall injuries in adults over 65 every year, and about $754 million is spent on fatal falls. Reduce overall healthcare spending by training your caregivers to prevent readmissions.

    As most families hire caregivers to enable their clients to stay within their home, it’s important your caregivers know what constitutes successful readmission prevention: strengthened relationships with referral sources, promoted client health outcomes, and increased client satisfaction/length of service without interruptions.

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Seniors are at a higher risk for COPD, a chronic inflammatory lung disease that obstructs airflow, than any other age group. This is especially relevant while the effects of COVID-19 are still circling.

    Prepare your caregivers to care for clients with breathing difficulties such as COPD by training them on keeping a client’s airway clean, using gentle methods to encourage physical activity, and showing clients how to use their oxygen properly.

    Training caregivers to create COPD-friendly meals will ensure clients with COPD are getting adequate nutrition with as little distress to the lungs as possible.

  • Heart attack: As common as a stroke and just as silent, 805,000 Americans have a heart attack each year. 1 in every 5 goes unnoticed until it’s too late. Your caregivers can help reverse this statistic by spotting the early warning signs.

    Training your caregivers to specialize in cardiovascular care will not only put your agency on the map but will literally save lives. Teach your caregivers how to spot the signs of a heart attack and care for clients who experience a heart attack from the moment they are released from the hospital.

  • Common medications: The average adult over the age of 65 takes 4 medications a day, but do your caregivers know exactly what they’re reminding their clients to take?

    Train your caregivers to know common medications with their functions like: Hydrocodone: pain management; Omeprazole: heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux relief; Diuretics (a category): manages high blood pressure; and Metformin: optimizes insulin management while lowering blood sugar levels in clients with diabetes. It’s also crucial that your caregivers understand which medications interact with each other, how to identify a contraindication, and what to take note of when clients begin a new medication.
